Paying Rent With Credit Cards in Hong Kong: The 2026 Expat Guide

Paying Rent With Credit Cards in Hong Kong: The 2026 Expat Guide

In a city where a modest two-bedroom in Sai Ying Pun can cost more than a car payment and a mortgage back home combined, your rent is probably the single biggest check you write every month.

The good news: you can put it on a credit card. Your landlord still gets a plain bank transfer, and you collect cashback or airline miles on the way. The catch is a service fee, and whether you win or lose depends entirely on which platform and which card you pair together. This guide walks you through the options, the real costs, and the math that tells you if it is worth doing.

Can You Pay Rent With a Credit Card in Hong Kong?

Yes. Almost no private landlord in Hong Kong takes cards directly, since card processing fees eat into their income. Instead, you use a third-party rent payment platform that charges your card and then sends the full rent to your landlord's bank account.

  • Your landlord doesn't need to sign up or approve anything. They simply receive a normal bank deposit.
  • You pay a service fee, usually between about 1.6% and 2.8% of the rent for a Hong Kong-issued card.
  • You earn your card's usual rewards on the full amount, and some platforms add their own bonus miles or rebates.
  • It only makes sense if your rewards are worth more than the fee. That is the whole game.

How Paying Rent by Credit Card Works

The process is closer to online shopping than to banking. You register with a platform, upload your tenancy agreement, add your card and your landlord's bank details, and pay. The platform takes the rent plus its fee from your card, then transfers the rent to your landlord a few working days later.

Because the charge usually posts as an ordinary online transaction rather than a cash advance, it earns rewards like any other purchase. It also buys you breathing room: the money doesn't leave your bank account until your card statement is due, which can be several weeks later.

What you'll typically need:

  • A valid HKID card
  • A stamped tenancy agreement showing both parties' names, the address, the rent and the lease term
  • A credit card issued in Hong Kong (overseas cards are either not accepted or charged a much higher fee)
  • Your landlord's bank account details
iMoneySmart Tips

If you've just landed and your HKID appointment at Immigration is still weeks away, you won't be able to sign up for most platforms yet. Pay the first month and deposit by bank transfer, then switch to card payments once your HKID and a local credit card are in hand. Your first local card's welcome bonus is often the best reason to start, since two months of rent can clear a minimum-spend target in one go.

Best Platforms to Pay Rent With a Credit Card in Hong Kong

Three services cover most tenants' needs in 2026. Fees and promotions change often, so always check the live rate on the app before you confirm a payment.

RentSmart

RentSmart is the best-known dedicated rent platform in Hong Kong, and it partners with a long list of banks, including Standard Chartered, HSBC, BEA, Dah Sing, AEON, CCB (Asia) and Fubon, as well as big agencies like Midland, Centaline and Ricacorp.

  • Fees: 1.6% for Mastercard; 2.0% to 2.4% for Visa and UnionPay (Hong Kong- and Macau-issued cards). Cards issued elsewhere are listed at 2.98% to 4.0%.
  • First-time discount: Mastercard users can enter the code MASTERNRENT for a first payment fee as low as 1.1%.
  • Split payments: You can spread one month's rent across up to six cards, handy for staying within credit limits or maxing out several welcome bonuses.
  • Timing: Rent usually reaches your landlord on the third working day, and the daily cutoff is 11 p.m. on working days.
  • Beyond rent: You can also pay deposits, advance rent and agency commission, which matters when you're moving and facing two or three months of rent up front.

Best for: Most tenants, especially Mastercard holders and anyone chasing Asia Miles with the Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard, which RentSmart promotes at HK$6 per mile on rent.

Citi PayAll

Built into the Citi Mobile app, Citi PayAll lets Citi cardholders pay rent straight to a landlord's bank account, along with tax, tuition and management fees.

  • Fees: Shown on the confirmation screen before you pay and set per payment. Citi's own examples use a 1.8% fee, but it can vary by card and promotion.
  • Limits: Rent is capped at HK$50,000 a month, and you can pay the same recipient a maximum of twice a month.
  • No lease upload: Setup is quicker than dedicated rent platforms.

Best for: Anyone who already holds a Citi card, particularly Citi PremierMiles or Citi Prestige for miles collectors.

Rently

Rently, headquartered in Singapore with a Hong Kong office in Sheung Wan, is the newer option, and it layers its own miles program on top of your card's rewards.

  • Fee: 2.8% on its credit card plan.
  • Bonus miles: About 1 Max Mile per HK$12 of rent, credited to your HeyMax account and redeemable for flights, airline points or hotel stays.
  • Flexibility: Automated monthly payments, and a separate option to delay rent by up to 29 days if payday and rent day don't line up.

Best for: Frequent flyers who value the extra miles, and anyone who wants a set-and-forget setup.

Is Paying Rent With a Credit Card Worth It? Let's Do the Math

Take a HK$25,000 one-bedroom in Kennedy Town, paid through RentSmart with a Mastercard at 1.6%. You pay a HK$400 fee, so your card is charged HK$25,400. Here's how three kinds of cards play out:

Minus HK$400 fee

+HK$616

Miles card at HK$6 per mile

~4,233 miles

Miles, not cash

~HK$0.09 per mile

Worth it if you redeem for flights

That last line is the miles collector's test. If you're effectively buying miles for under 10 HK cents each, that's a good price. Over a year, the miles card above would earn roughly 50,000 miles, enough for a return economy trip to Japan with some left over.

The rule of thumb: If your card's reward rate on the charge is lower than the platform fee, stick to a free FPS bank transfer. If it's higher, or you want miles and value them at 10 cents or more, pay by card.

iMoneySmart Tips

High-rebate cards almost always cap their bonus at a monthly or annual spending amount, and some exclude certain merchant categories. Before you move HK$25,000 a month onto a card, read the fine print or test with one payment and check how it posts on your statement.

Which Credit Cards Work Best for Paying Rent?

There's no single best card, but the winners share a few traits:

  • Strong online-spend rewards. RentSmart transactions are classed as online spending by its partner banks, so cards with boosted online rebates tend to do well.
  • A good miles earn rate. Miles cards with an earn rate of around HK$6 per mile or better make the fee easier to justify.
  • A current platform promotion. Banks regularly run fee waivers or bonus miles for rent payments (for example, a free first payment with the Standard Chartered Cathay Mastercard on RentSmart). Timing your first payment around one can wipe out the fee entirely.
  • Welcome bonuses you haven't used yet. Rent is the easiest way to hit a new card's minimum spend.
iFor American readers

Using your US card from home is rarely worth it. Hong Kong platforms either don't accept overseas cards or charge close to 3% to 4%, and many US cards add a foreign transaction fee on top. Getting a local card is the better move.

How to Pay Rent With a Credit Card on RentSmart, Step by Step

  1. Download the app and register with your HKID.
  2. Upload your lease. A stamped tenancy agreement or stamp duty notice works. Approval usually takes one to two working days.
  3. Add your landlord's bank details and your credit card (or several, if you're splitting).
  4. Enter any promo code and check the fee on the confirmation screen.
  5. Pay at least three working days before your due date. Your landlord gets a text message once the rent lands, and you get a receipt as proof of payment.
iMoneySmart Tips

"Working days" is where Hong Kong trips people up. A run of public holidays (Chung Yeung, the Lunar New Year stretch) or a Typhoon Signal No. 8 that shuts the banks for a day can push your transfer past the due date. If rent is due on the 1st, set a phone reminder for the 25th of the month before.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Carrying a balance. Credit card interest in Hong Kong often runs above 30% a year. One month of unpaid interest wipes out a year of rent rewards. Only do this if you pay your statement in full.
  • Ignoring rebate caps. A 4% card that caps rewards at HK$200 a month is really a 0.8% card on HK$25,000 of rent.
  • Forgetting posting dates. Transactions can take one to three business days to post, and some bank promotions count by posting date, not payment date.
  • Hitting your credit limit. New arrivals often get modest limits. A HK$30,000 rent on a HK$40,000 limit leaves little room for anything else that month.
  • Not telling your landlord. Consent isn't required, but a quick WhatsApp saves confusion when the deposit shows up from an unfamiliar name.

FAQ

Can I pay rent with a credit card in Hong Kong without my landlord knowing?

Your landlord doesn't need to approve it or sign up for anything. Platforms like RentSmart and Rently send the full rent to your landlord's bank account as a normal transfer. RentSmart does notify the landlord by text when rent arrives, and it's good practice to let them know yourself.

How much does it cost to pay rent by credit card in Hong Kong?

Expect a service fee of about 1.6% to 2.8% of your rent with a Hong Kong-issued card, depending on the platform and card network. RentSmart charges 1.6% for Mastercard and 2.0% to 2.4% for Visa and UnionPay, while Rently charges 2.8%. Citi PayAll shows its fee before you confirm each payment.

Can I use a foreign credit card to pay rent in Hong Kong?

Usually not cost-effectively. Most platforms require a Hong Kong-issued card, and where overseas cards are accepted, fees run roughly 3% to 4% before any foreign transaction fee your bank adds. It's generally better to open a local card once you have your HKID.

Does paying rent by credit card count as a cash advance?

Not on dedicated rent platforms. The charge typically posts as an ordinary purchase (RentSmart's partner banks treat it as online spending), so it earns rewards and doesn't trigger cash advance fees. Always check your card's terms, since each bank decides what earns rewards.

Can I pay my rental deposit with a credit card?

Yes, on some platforms. RentSmart lets you pay deposits, advance rent and agency commission, and it runs fee waivers with certain agencies and cards. That can make moving day, when you might owe three months' rent at once, a big boost toward a card's welcome bonus.
