iPhone 16’s key features overview: worth the upgrade?
iPhone 16 Pro: larger screen with the thinnest bezels ever
The design of the new iPhone 16 remains similar to its predecessor, but the screen sizes of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have increased, now measuring 6.3 and 6.7 inches, respectively, up from 6.1 and 6.3 inches. Apple is also highlighting that the bezels on the iPhone 16 Pro are the thinnest in history — being 33% slimmer than the previous generation. The iPhone 16 Pro now weighs 199 grams, which is 12 grams heavier than the iPhone 15 Pro.
In terms of color options, the new iPhone 16 comes in five vibrant shades. Alongside classic black and white, it introduces pink, teal, and light blue, which are significantly brighter than the previous generation’s subtle hues. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Pro’s colorway is more muted and conservative, featuring the standard black and white, titanium, and a new Desert Titanium.
Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro models continue to support Super Retina XDR displays and 120Hz ProMotion technology, with an improved resolution compared to the last generation.
Sapphire coated Camera Control Button
All iPhone 16 models now feature a Camera Control Button, made from sapphire glass coating. Apple claims it offers a tactile feel comparable to a DSLR camera shutter, allowing for precise detection of pressure, sliding, and timing. This enables users to quickly control various camera functions such as shutter release, focus, auto-lock, and zooming.
In addition, now the Action Button will replace all traditional mute switches across the entire iPhone 16 lineup, allowing users to customize different shortcuts, such as activating night mode, translation, camera, flashlight, and more.
New A18 and A18 Pro chips: 30% faster than its predecessor
All models of the new iPhone 16 will feature the brand new A18 and A18 Pro chips, designed to support Apple Intelligence (AI) capabilities. The internal design of the iPhone 16 has also been improved for better heat dissipation and increased battery life. Apple claims that the new A18 chip is 30% faster than the A16 Bionic chip of the previous iPhone 15, while also reducing GPU power consumption by 35%.
On the other hand, the A18 Pro chip, equipped in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, utilizes the latest second-generation 3nm process, resulting in a 20% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor. This allows for seamless performance even while playing demanding 3D games or recording 4K video. However, the English version of Apple Intelligence will not be available until November, while the Chinese version is expected to debut as early as 2025.
New Photographic Styles for customizing tone and aesthetics
While the new iPhone 16 camera specs remain largely unchanged from the previous generation—with all four models featuring a 48-megapixel—the iPhone 16 Pro models have now upgraded their Ultra Wide Camera to 48 megapixels as well. Additionally, the sensor and data read speeds in the iPhone 16 Pro models are now twice as fast as the previous generation, although the 5x optical zoom remains at 12 megapixels.
All iPhone 16 models will come equipped with the new Photographic Styles feature, which allows users to preview changes live before applying them. With a control pad, you can adjust the tone and color intensity of specific hues without altering the entire image color scheme. Apple has also improved skin tone rendering, enabling you to create a personalized style that can be consistently applied across all your photos.
Furthermore, you can now modify the Photographic Style even after capturing an image, a feature not available in previous models. This makes it easier than ever to achieve the perfect look for your selfies and photos.
Apple Intelligence: Hong Kong availability remains uncertain
Apple has devoted significant attention to promoting its new Apple Intelligence (AI) features during the iPhone launch event. A key highlight was Visual Intelligence, which allows users to simply point their camera at a target, enabling the phone to recognize the subject and provide relevant information, such as restaurant names, species of the animal, or details about event venues. Visual Intelligence can also integrate with third-party applications like Google Search and ChatGPT.
However, Apple has not yet confirmed whether all features of Apple Intelligence will be accessible in Hong Kong, or if certain functionalities may be restricted. We will need to wait for further details from Apple to understand the full capabilities available to users in the region.
