Types of electric vehicle charging stations in Hong Kong
You may not know that most electric vehicle manufacturers in Europe adopt the IEC standard, while Hong Kong currently follows the European standard.
Electric car charging standards are divided into two types: AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current). AC is generally considered as “medium charging”, while DC is “fast charging”. And here are the common 8 charging station plugs in Hong Kong, with each standard differentiated by the shape of the charging connector.
Alternating Current (AC) | Direct Current (DC) |
13A (BS1363) | CHAdeMO |
Type 1 (SAE J1772) | CCS1 (Combo 1) |
Type 2 (IEC 62196) | CCS2 (Combo 2) |
GB/T 20234.2 | GB/T 20234.3 |
CSS2 (Combined Charging System 2)
CSS2 supports fast charging and all updated Tesla models use CSS2. Currently, there are not many public CSS Combo stations in Hong Kong—around 80 stations.
ChAdeMO
ChAdeMO plug supports fast charging and is the fast charging standard in Japan. Currently, there are only about 50 public ChAdeMO charging stations in Hong Kong, such as Basement of Site 2, Olympian City.
13A (BS1363)
13A is the most common charging method for electric cars in Hong Kong, using a British three-pin plug. It is also the slowest, taking about 1 hour to travel only 13 kilometers. However, there are about 1500 13A charging spots available in Hong Kong. When there are no other options or time is not a concern, 13A can be a lifesaver.
Type 1 (SAE J1772)
Type 1 is compatible with CCS1(DC). It is a plug for single-phase charging, with a maximum charging level of 7.4 kW.
Type 2 (IEC 62196)
Type 2 plugs charge medium/fast and look similar to CSS2 plugs and they are compatible with CCS2(DC).
Type 2 charging stations have the largest numbers in Hong Kong, with about 2500 stations ≤20kW and about 450 stations >20kW.
GB/T 20234.2
GB/T 20234.2 has only 1 compatible charging station in Hong Kong, which is the artificial island parking lot of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Electric vehicle drivers may need to use adapters to accommodate the charging station standard when charging.
Useful tools for finding charging stations
EV are running out of power and wanna find out where the nearest charging station is? Easy! Check out the following mobile apps, which are designed to help drivers easily find charging stations on maps.
Environmental Protection Department “EV Charging Easy”
On June 17, 2022, the Environmental Protection Department released a new app called “EV Charging Easy“. The app helps drivers find charging stations by showing their real-time availability on a map. The map shows which charging stations are occupied and which ones are free.
E-Charge HK
Developed by Hong Kong EV Power Limited, the mobile app covers the locations of over 400 charging stations in Hong Kong and allows free members to reserve designated charging stations.
EV charging tips
Charging electric vehicles has certain etiquette. Knowing the “rules” can reduce unnecessary misunderstandings and disputes between car owners.
Only park in charging spaces when charging
Charging spaces in Hong Kong parking lots are relatively scarce, with only 2-3 charging spaces in a parking lot. So it’s better to leave the charging space for others if you are not in need of charging.
Remember to leave promptly after charging
Not only is it courteous to leave promptly after charging, but if you don’t, you may receive an overtime fine calculated per minute. So, don’t forget to set a timer and remind yourself to move your car away once you have finished charging.
Free charging has time limits
The CLP Quick Charge User Guide says that quick charging stations for electric vehicles are made to give drivers an easy way to charge their car in an emergency. It takes a maximum of 40 minutes to charge the car once with a quick charge. If the car isn’t fully charged after 40 minutes and you want it fully charged, you’ll need to wait in line again or switch to a different type of charger from CLP.
Principles of reasonable/fair use for EV charging
While there is no single standard or rule for reasonable/fair use, car owners should make sensible decisions based on the situation, such as:
- Keep the charging facilities clean when using them
- Put the charging plug back in its original position after charging
- Proactively provide their phone number to other car owners who need to charge
- Get permission before using someone else’s plugs and adapters
- Not let friends cut in line to charge
- Leave after the battery is charged to 80% (continuing to charge is inefficient and can harm the battery.)
Hong Kong electric car charging stations distribution overview
As at the end of June 2023, (according to the Environmental Protection Department,) there are 6,142 charging stations available for public use in Hong Kong, including 3,596 medium-speed charging stations and 1,022 fast charging stations, distributed across the 18 districts of Hong Kong.

Link REIT charging station
Link REIT has installed more than 600 electric vehicle charging stations across 113 shopping mall car parks in Hong Kong so far, with plans to expand further and aims to have 3,000 charging stations in place by 2024.
The first group of newly built charging stations is expected to launch as early as the second quarter of 2023. The expansion of the electric vehicle charging station network will mainly focus on medium-speed charging stations.

Frequently asked questions: EV charging stations
Where can you charge your EV for free?
Currently, charging electric vehicles in government car parks is free. This is meant to give financial reasons for people to start using EVs early on.
You may check out the “EV-Charging Easy” Mobile App for more public charging station information.
What are the charging station providers in Hong Kong?
Currently, there are 13 main charging station providers in Hong Kong, including Autotoll, bolt, ChargeNow, CLP, Cornerstone, E-Charge, E+ Charging, HK Electric, Mercedes-Benz EQ Charging, Porsche, Shell Recharge, Smart Charge, and Tesla.
How is charging for electric cars billed?
Charging for electric cars can be divided into three billing modes: free, pay-per-kWh, and monthly subscription.
Generally, mid-speed charging stations provide free charging, while fast charging stations usually charge per kWh, such as HKD 3.3/kWh, or per hour.
As for monthly subscription plans, they are commonly launched in cooperation with residential estates, which is more favorable for residents living nearby.
What are the charging station standards?
There are eight charging station standards in Hong Kong, including
4 AC standards:
