Can I lower my credit limit to reduce the potential risk of theft?

Cardholders can request to adjust their credit limit with the issuing bank according to their needs and abilities, although some banks may charge a handling fee. To reduce your credit limit, you can contact the credit card hotline or fill out the “Credit Limit Change Form.” Furthermore, if requested, some banks can temporarily decrease a customer’s credit limit during overseas travel to minimize potential losses from stolen credit cards. The credit limit will be restored to its previous level once the customer returns to Hong Kong.

What to do if my credit card is lost or stolen?

If you are safe and not in an emergency situation, call the credit card hotline as soon as possible to report the loss and prevent further use of your credit card. Then, go to the police station to report the incident and provide an explanation of what happened.

Am I responsible for unauthorized transactions made on my stolen credit card?

In general, if you report the loss of your credit card promptly, the bank will cover any losses due to unauthorized transactions. However, if your credit card was stolen before you reported it, the situation becomes more complex.

If you take reasonable precautions to protect your credit card and personal password before the loss, and report the loss promptly, with the bank confirming that it was theft, you will only be liable for the “maximum liability limit” amount (usually not exceeding HK$500). However, if you were involved in fraud or serious negligence, you will bear full responsibility.

Do I still need to report the loss of my credit card even if it’s unlikely to be found?

If your credit card was stolen but not yet reported, the bank may investigate the transaction. A police report is important evidence to show that the transaction was not made by the cardholder, which increases the chances of the bank waiving the amount. Additionally, if you lose your credit card or other belongings while traveling, you must obtain a “police report” to claim compensation for loss from travel insurance companies.

How can I manage installment payments and automatic bill payments if I lose my credit card?

However, for automatic bill payments, you may need to inform the merchant of the change in your credit card number so that they can transfer the information to the new card. Please note that the bank’s notification policy may affect the actual situation.
